how will
it be represented and revisited in films of the future? Join a

leading filmmakers to discuss these and other critical issues.

Genetic engineering is hot news. During the Nazi era, doctors

Have the
enormous scientific advances in genetics since then increased
the
dangers?

COMPETITION WINNERS & AWARDS PRESENTATION
OUT OF THAT DARKNESS INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION
First-time and established directors were asked to submit films
(completed since 1996) addressing the complex legacy of the Holocaust
in
an age of genocide. They were encouraged to treat the broader
issues of
discrimination and persecution in a compelling and innovative
way. The
enormous number of entries exceeded our expectations, and attest
to the
importance of this particular area of filmmaking, which poses
a very
special set of challenges. The award for first-time director is
£34,000,
and for the open category, £36,000. Thanks to all who entered,
and
congratulations to the two winners!

Discussion follows ALL MY LOVED ONES (see Film Listings)

If I am not for myself, what
am I?
Closing Event: RESCUERS & RESCUED
In an age of continuing genocide, the individual can still make
a
difference, as those who risk their lives to rescue others can
testify.
Both rescuers and rescued will tell their amazing personal stories.
But
can rescue extend beyond individuals to a whole culture? An exciting
new
project explores this possibility.
